  1. Maths undergraduate Andy King and PhD in Applied Maths, Dr Matthew Boulton, both from UEA, are co–founders of digital start up Blue Butterfly. They have won a £10,000 kick start funding to take their “TaptoWiFi” app to market.

  2. is one year old in its present form, though the idea has been around with co-founders Ben White and Bill Zimmerman for a lot longer. After experimenting with the ning platform, they decided to build their own platform where they can tailor the functionality of the site to match the needs of both African entrepreneurs and investors. As bandwidth opens up on the continent, especially later in 2012, I'm helping the team with some experimental video projects. We're actually working from the premise that video isn't needed at all, unless it can add something to the story. Ben White recently gave a presentation which explained very clearly the thinking behind VC4Africa, why it's needed, how it's working with collaborative teams across the continent, and what's been achieved in such a short time so far. I confess to being very impressed by their ability to work WITH entrepreneurs rather than FOR them. This is turning sharing of expertise into a sustainable business model. Enjoy.

  3. This is the first in a series of pilot videos made for the African entrepreneurs platform During a recent brainstorm meeting in Amsterdam, I talked to several investors asking them what they were looking for in start-ups. Some of the best answers came from Sean Murphy, who runs Chembe Ventures.

I have also been using the opportunity to experiment more fully with Final Cut Pro X to see whether I would recommend it to a TV station I am helping to start up. In it's current form, the answer is definitely NO. The enhancements that FCPX brings to audio and the ability to mix and match content from various sources is great. But the way Apple has messed with the timeline and archiving of the metadata doesn't work for me.

  4. Are there other ways to fund social projects that change the world, other than waiting around for a non-existant government grant? If there are, then SOCAP is a good start. There's another meeting coming up in September 2011. To get an overview of what's going on, here are some impressions from the recent SOCAP Europe meeting in Amsterdam.

  5. VC4Africa is a new approach to bridging investors with entrepreneurs. The secret lies in the growth of the Internet platform, combined with face-to-face meetings across the continent and beyond. The format is tried and tested, but the implementation always have a local, relevant flavour.

These are interviews which I think are relevant to community media projects in Africa. They are moving from purely FM projects to playing a much greater role in the success of society. I post one or two new videos a week on my main Vimeo site.
