Mango Season is an eclectic mix of west coast 70's pop, jazz and bossa nova rhythms, and island style songwriting that is deeply rooted in place. They draw upon the syncopated rhythms of R&B, the soaring vocal harmonies of traditional hawaiian music, and the fingerpicking of slack-key guitar. Their music has the familiar feel of a melody on the tip of your tongue and it has the easy lightness of a tropical breeze. Mango Season calls their unique mix of sounds island soul/jazz.
Mango Season is a meeting of three musical partners, each with their own unique voice. At the heart of the group is the husband and wife musical partnership of Curtis Kamiya and Annie Kamiya. From their first meeting in college at the University of Puget Sound, Annie and Curtis were singing together. Annie loved to sing the music of jazz and R&B vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald, India Arie and Joss Stone. Curtis comes from the songwriter tradition of James Taylor and America. As a duo they performed together in San Francisco and Seattle before settling in Honolulu.
Matt Snow and Curtis Kamiya both attended Punahou School and met in the music department. Matt’s lifelong love of jazz was kindled in the jazz band where he played trombone and Curtis played guitar. As singers they also sang together in the choir. In the summer of 2009, Curtis, Annie, and Matt started playing as a trio in Downtown Honolulu. To complete the sound they recruited Lindy Patterson on percussion, where his latin and world rhythms provide the driving pulse of the music. They also recruited saxophone virtuoso Ben Peters to weave his melodies throughout the music.
Mango Season stands firmly in the tradition of hawaiian music innovation of Kalapana, Cecilio & Kapono, and Olomana. Their unique mix of influences and the artistic and musical excellence that they deliver is already making an impact on the Honolulu music community. "Mango Sample" will be Mango Season's first EP project and will be followed by a full length album in the fall.
