Charlie and I were going up to shoot stills of the Paragliding World Cup from the tandem today. When we got to the top it was apparent that we would not be flying due to the crazy wind conditions we would have to launch in. About 70 were able to launch today and it was crazy to watch each of the takeoffs. I decided at one point it would be wise to shoot a bit of video on the launches, and as I did this collapse happened. Please excuse the blurriness, as I did not have my eyepiece due to thinking I would be shooting stills primarily today.
Soon after this the task for the day was called off due to the terrible wind.
The pilot was fine, and everyone was surprised he didn't throw his reserve and opted to try to pull it off... thank God he was able to at the last moment.
PWC Colombia 2011.
I take off, catch a nice thermal, decide to turn in it while still pretty close to the hill (not much room for error).
While the glider is turned towards the hill, a friend of mine takes off and by the time I realize that, it's too late to turn the other way as the weight is fully shifted towards the right & the glider is already engaged. I realized that our paths will cross and I pull harder hoping that by the time I reach him the glider will face the other way, but unfortunately due to the extreme turn it enters a spin and down I go.
I end up hitting the hill at quite a high speed and manage to hurt my backbone, but eventually it all turns out okay - no permanent damage.
No animals were hurt in the making of the video :)
