"A Digital Tomorrow" is a design fiction video produced for Curious Rituals, a research project conducted in July-August 2012 by Nicolas Nova (The Near Future Laboratory / HEAD-Genève), Katherine Miyake, Nancy Kwon and Walton Chiu from the media design program.
This research project was about gestures, postures and digital rituals that typically emerged with the use of digital technologies (computers, mobile phones, sensors, robots, etc.): gestures such as recalibrating your smartphone doing an horizontal 8 sign with your hand, the swiping of wallet with RFID cards in public transports, etc. The aim of the project was to envision the future of gestures and rituals based on: 1. A documentation of current digital gestures, 2. The making of design fiction films that speculate about their evolution.
"Curious Rituals" was produced as part of a research residency in the Media Design Program at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
UNDER TOMORROWS SKY is a fictional, future city. Liam Young of Tomorrows Thoughts Today has assembled a think tank of mad scientists, literary astronauts, digital poets, speculative gamers, mavericks, visionaries and luminaries to collectively develop this imaginary place, the landscapes that surround it and the stories it contains. On Saturday June 16 and Sunday June 17 the think tank came together in physical space at MU but also in virtual space for a weekend of public presentations, discussions and workshops.
Come behind the scenes as we opened up the design process of the speculative city and exposed the deliberations of the Under Tomorrows Sky think tank. See the work in progress and join in as we debate the possibilities of emerging biologies and technologies.
Under Tomorrows sky will open at MU in Eindhoven on August 10th 2012 and will be developed further for the 2013 Lisbon Architecture Triennale.
The public think tank included contributions from Bruce Sterling, Rachel Armstrong, Warren Ellis, Simon Ings, Centre for Science and Imagination, Geoff Maungh + Nicola Twilley, Next Nature and live sketching from Paul Duffield and Edouard Caplin.
Part 02: The ecology of the city, biohazard favelas zones, the edges of the city.
