  1. This short film offers a glimpse into the lives of six children who fled Somalia in 2002 for Nairobi after their mother disappeared and their father and grandfather were murdered because they were members of the minority Tunni tribe. Unable to seek safety in the refugee camp because of the notorious violence against minority tribes, the children have been living alone on the streets of Nairobi with 16-year-old Mohammed taking on the sole responsibility for caring for himself and his five siblings. On November 4th, 2008, with the help of RefugePoint (formly Mapendo International) - an organization that protects the most at risk refugees in Africa - the children were reunited with their grandmother and Aunt in Columbus, Ohio.

  2. NAIROBI, Kenya--The long rainy season in Kenya has begun and sudden storms regularly burst over Nairobi. Many welcome the downpours, which signal the end of another dry summer and wash the steamy crowded capital clean each morning.

In Kibera, a massive slum of rusty tin roofs and makeshift homes spreading out from the southwest of the city, the rain is turning the twisting dirt roads and alleyways to thick red mud.

Here in one of largest slums in the world--a flashpoint for violence stemming from Kenya's parliamentary elections in December--the rain is causing open sewers to swell and uncollected garbage to rush in rivers of tattered plastic and human waste through backyards.

  5. The Last Survivor explores the idea of genocide in the 21st century as a platform for social action. The film follows the lives of four genocides survivors – The Holocaust, Rwanda, Darfur, and Congo. Centered on the basic premise that genocide is not only a consequence of intolerance and discrimination, but also the important acknowledgment that “democracy dies if you don’t work for it”—that we each have role in ending genocide and improving our world. By focusing on the work of several Survivors turned activists who are leading this global fight to end genocide, the film seeks to inspire youth to get involved in the democratic process – taking an active stand against genocide as an idea and practice in the 21st century. Ultimately, the film will be a call to collective action, declaring that we all have a responsibility and
obligation to end genocide and it is only by walking together—each taking his/her own small steps—that
    real change is created.

(The background photograph is of Kibera, the slums of Nairobi, Kenya. Homes in Kibera are shacks of corrugated metal, with no plumbing or electricity. 20,000 children in Kibera can't afford to attend public school, due to the cost of books and uniforms. HIV/AIDS devastates the community.)

The Refugee Center was founded in 1996 after the first refugees from war-ridden Chechnya fled to Moscow and found that their children were barred from schools because they had no local registration. The center offers its services to over 70 children today from many different countries, including Afghanistan, Syria and Congo.

In summer 2015 director & producer Valentina Gordeeva went to meet the children and the staff members of the center.
