A pre-Dancing Dog era production, our media thesis, the year we graduated from IHECS, Brussels.
1968. A handful of pioneers, mostly Europeans disappointed by the Western society, began the construction of Auroville, a utopian city. 40 years later, what was a desert plateau lost in Tamil Nadu, India, has been transformed into a jungle. Under the canopy, 2000 Aurovilians try every day to realize the ideals of Mira Alfassa, called the Mother. For the city to grow, they must push the limits of their environment and their conscience through thick and thin. The task is gigantic. This documentary tackles the lives of Aurovilians, the paradoxes the city faces, and explains the reasons which led them to start afresh and to reject a system that will soon dominate all continents.
