Overcriminalization – A Policy Roundtable Discussion

Friday, May 11, 2012
12:00 — 1:00 p.m.
Rayburn 2226

Featuring:

Norman L. Reimer, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers
Dick Thornburgh, Counsel, K&L Gates and former Attorney General of the United States

We will be exploring issues related to the implications behind the scope and size of federal regulations. This policy roundtable discussion will consider the effects of the existing regulatory regime and discuss whether or not a true ‘overcriminalization’ problem exists. As a policy roundtable, the panelists will seek to lay out on-going issues and discuss potential solutions in a discussion format.

Questions that will be analyzed include:

What specific problems, if any, have been seen?
Is the creation of crimes by bureaus and agencies a growing issue?
Is there an optimal number of criminal regulations, and what should the severity of the penalties be?
Reasons why you should attend:

Learn the real world implications of an increasingly complex criminal regulatory regime.
Discover what has been done to tackle overcriminalization so far.
Engage the panelists to understand their view on how possible legal reforms might improve the existing system.
