OUT of the PAN INTO the FIRE
Iowa Partnership in the Arts with The Moving Company

Written by: Steven Epp, Nathan Keepers, and Dominique Serrand

    Directed by Dominique Serrand

Since 2010 The Moving Company has lead successful residencies at university theatre programs around the country. Working with acting and design students from the UI MFA theatre program, The Moving Company has developed a new theatrical event called Out of the Pan Into the Fire. This exciting new work is an inquiry into outrageous physical imagery and movement, monstrous characters, and impossible narrative, combined with video and live camera work using the world of fairytales as its jumping off point. A place Grimm and grotesque, nasty and naive. So, what exactly happens after the kids have been burned in the oven, anyway?

The Moving Company is co–led by Artistic Directors Dominique Serrand and Steven Epp and Artistic Associate Nathan Keepers. They formerly led Theatre de la Jeune Lune in Minneapolis, one of the most creative and innovative theatres in the United States.

The Iowa Partnership in the Arts program was established in 1992 to support the creation of major new works of theatrical art. The program is part of a long tradition of Iowa faculty and students collaborating with professional artists to develop new work.

    By August Strindberg
    Adapted by Caryl Churchill
    Directed by David Hanzal

A young woman comes from another world to see if life is really as difficult as people make it out to be. In Strindberg's A Dream Play, written in 1901, characters merge into each other, locations change in an instant, and a locked door becomes an obsessively recurrent image. As Strindberg himself wrote in his Preface, he wanted "to imitate the disjointed yet seemingly logical shape of a dream. Everything can happen, everything is possible and probable. Time and place do not exist." Caryl Churchill, perhaps the most fascinating and respected female dramatist in the English–speaking world, has taken on Strindberg's Dream in this spare and resonant adaptation.

A Dream Play includes material and themes of an adult nature, including simulated violence and imagery not suitable for children.

Tickets are available through the Hancher Box Office in the Old Capitol Town Center, 335–1160, 1–800–HANCHER, http://www.hancher.uiowa.edu/tickets

Kate Hardcastle is an upstanding country girl. Charles Marlow is a socially awkward city boy. After Charles flubs their first meeting, Kate disguises herself as a barmaid to get to know him more. Another couple attempts to elope with the help of Tony Lumpkin, who attempts to pinch the family jewels of the Hardcastle house. Follow awkward lovers through courtship, see city slickers manage mistaken identities, and watch a family debacle while Kate corrects the mistakes of the night. Think maintaining your social network and trudging through online dating is challenging? Not to mention dealing with your dysfunctional family? Well step back 240 years to a time when things were just as difficult, but hilariously so. Charles stumbles and Kate stoops in this uproarious comedy of manners. But can they somehow conquer the cunning game of love?

She Stoops to Conquer contains adult themes and is not suitable for children.
