English : "The Myth and the Reason". Written and directed by Paolo Conte.
English Translation : Susan Maggioni
An extraordinary voyage into the anthropological origin of Myth, in which dream and reality constantly overlap the brutality of the highlands. Returning to the desolation of the wilderness, the human being goes back to the source. Every sense returns to its original sharpness and thought traces its way back in the opposite direction, towards its oneiric root. So one can catch glimpses of strange shapes, perceive the voices of the clouds and listen to the thoughts of animals. What anthropological and cultural suggestions does desolation of nature produce in modern human been is exactly what the full-lenght film will try to focus.
The nature, not shown from naturalistic point of view (as the shorts could suggest), will be the lost third dimension of an introspective voyage into the spontaneous myth that flows each time we come back to wilderness and how the reason elaborate this lost sensation.
The documentary is entirely shot in Valle d'Aosta ( the the bilingual french-italian region of italian Alps, boarding the four 4000 m of Alps, particularly Ruitor glacier range, Gran Paradiso National Park valleys and Mont Blanc range). will be produced with italian voice over and french and english subtitles.
Trailer subtitles in English:
The true myth is born within us and blends with reality, vanishes and reappears on the words of the wind.
The world was once flat like an ancient sea - the wind that had always existed dragged the lands that inhabited oblivion - the eternal wind blew against the rock to shape its demiurges - it was the time before creation and the demiurges fought with the aid of the powerful weapons of orogenesis and alchemy - the land demiurge brought forth the burning sun - that of waters the chilling moon - Kerioundoui, master of lands - and his son, the sun, - unfurled the limits of the world - with storms of rock and fire - Kempetala, master of waters - and his daughter the moon - covered everything with a thick and chilling night - The myth and the reason - a poetic voyage in search of the ancestral myth - that arises in us when we find a contact with wilderness - it is then that myth takes shape in the rock - to talk to us through - the fabulous thoughts of animals - with the voice of the clouds - built of essential thoughts and actions - they constantly overlap reality - to finally converge - in the middle earth of our imagination - since always.

The Cenci is a drama written by Shelley during his travel in Rome and based on a sad case really happened under Pope Clement VIII in 1599.
The short animation is focused on Beatrice Cenci, the daughter of a very influent and rich noble man of the city. According to historical details leading to the legend, Francesco Cenci (the father) abused his wife and his sons and reached the point of committing incest with Beatrice. He was jailed for other crimes, but due to the leniency with which the nobles were treated, he was freed early. Beatrice tried to inform the authorities about the frequent mistreatments, but nothing happened although everybody in Rome knew what kind of person her father was. When he found out that his daughter had reported him, he sent Beatrice and Lucrezia away from Rome to live in the family's country castle at La Petrella del Salto in the Abruzzi mountains.
The four Cencis decided they had no alternative but to try to get rid of Francesco, and together organised a plot. In 1598, during one of Francesco's stays at the castle, two vassals (one of whom had become Beatrice's secret lover) helped them to drug him, but this failed to kill Francesco. Following this Beatrice, her siblings, and their stepmother bludgeoned Francesco to death with a hammer and threw the body off a balcony to make it look like an accident. No one believed the death to be accidental, however.
On 11 September 1599, at dawn, they were taken to Sant'Angelo Bridge, where the scaffold was usually built. In the cart to the scaffold, Giacomo was subjected to continual torture. On reaching the scaffold his head was smashed with a mallet. His corpse was then quartered. The public spectacle continued with the executions, first Lucrezia and finally Beatrice. Both took their turns on the block to be beheaded with a sword.
Beatrice then became a symbol for the people of Rome of resistance against the arrogant aristocracy, and a legend arose. It related that every year on the night before the anniversary of her death, she was said to come back to the bridge where she was executed, carrying her severed head.
The speaking of the animation is the preface of the drama that Shelley wrote in 1819 to introduce his work.
The short animation "The Cenci" is part of the documentary dedicated to last four years of Percy Bysshe Shelley's life (english poet 1792-1822), entirely spent in italy (1818-1822), where he died during a sea storm, while he was sailing to the gulf of lerici from pisa and leighorn in his schooner " ariel".

The title is one verse of Percy Bysshe Shelley's poetry.. The documentary will be dedicated to last four years of Percy Bysshe Shelley's life (english poet 1792-1822), spent in italy (1818-1822), particularly in Tuscany, where he died drowned during a sudden storm, while he was sailing with his schooner the "Ariel" to the gulf of Lerici from Leighorn, where his friends Lord Byron and Leigh Hunt stayed.
Just three years have been passing since french revolution, when Shelley was born, a period of huge changes in Europe. He grows up in the romantic period, but he still remains an unconventional poet for his contemporaries who often criticize, even censure his poetry and philosophical works. He composes many philosophical and political satyrical works to attack the hypocrisy and impiety of political and religious power, that he judges responsible of moral slavery, wars and misery of his time.
Shelley leaves England for Italy in 1818 (his doctors suggest Italy for his health condition, but there are many others reasons for him to leave England), with his following, the wife Mary Shelley (née Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin), two sons, the sister-in-law Jane (Claire Clairmont) and her daughter Allegra from Lord Byron. Allegra will die at fifth for typhus fever at the convent of Bagnocavallo (Romagna-Italy), and it was one of many sorrows that Mary and Percy Shelley will be enduring. Two of the three children (Clara and William) of Mary and Percy will be dying in Italy for illness. These are hard times for the children, but undoubtedly, the shelley's children are constantly stressed by their moving from town to town.
Many poets he knew, one of them, Lord Byron, will have a very special place in his life. But he will praise Keats too (after his dead in 1821) for whom he dedicated a poem, Adonais.
The documentary is particularly focused on some lyrics and poems of Shelley (Alastor, Prometheus, Mont Blanc and so on), that seem to be a refuge to the cruelty of his life (pain and illness), and inconsistency of human been that he considers unworthy and without any ideal. This is exactly the dimension (the poetic dimension) of his work and life that it is interesting for me to investigate. I decided to represent it through animations (2D and lower 3D), because I think it's the better way to exalt the dreamy, fantastic or terrific atmosphere of his poetry.
This dreamy and poetic dimension will constantly overlap the chronicles of his life, the places where he lived, letters, epistolaries to his love Mary Shelley (become famous for the novel "Frankestein or the modern Prometheus"") and the friends, as fresh record of life.
The water, for Shelley, has always been the fatal attraction. So the Film, will start on the shore where his body was found and will end with magical return to ocean, where his soul still rest in peace.
An extraordinary hill deep buried in italian Apennines (Tuscany). The English Poet Shelley reached the top, and it's told that he fainted for the intense fragrance of flowers, actually the meaning of "Prato fiorito" in english is bloomy grass. Prato Fiorito is situated near the last anarchical community of italy (Montefegatesi) and it's really a forgotten place. Some old accounts tell about Witches screaming in stormy nights.
Shot with Panasonic HVX201 and Panasonic GH2 lumix. No color Correction was added to the video to preserve the spontaneity of the edit.
Asia and Prometheus is my short animation interpretation of the Shelley's lyrical drama inspired by the lost drama of Aeschylus (The Prometheus Unbound).
The Act I starts with Prometheus (Titan son of the Titan Iapetus by Clymene) bound to a precipice, speaking to Jupiter who condemned him to the eternal punishment and torture for his disobedience (he gave the fire of knowledge to the humans). Prometheus is a divinity who doesn't accept the unforgiveness of gods vs human condition, He feels compassion for sons (the humans) and the miserable condition of their horizon. In Shelle's Prometheus, Prometheus will marry Asia, which is considered in some traditional sources, his mother.
The ACT II is focused on Asia. Asia in Greek mythology was a daughter of Oceanus and Tethys, the wife of the Titan Iapetus, and mother of Atlas, Prometheus, Epimetheus and Menoetius. In the Prometheus Unbound of Percy Bysshe Shelley Asia, symbol of the nature, will be married with Prometheus, made free by Hercules, so a kingdom of love and right will begin.
The Prometheus Unbound is considered maybe his best and mature work after "The Cenci".
