1. Trick Tip #6: The Method Grab
A must-have stye trick that's as classic as it is fun to pull all over the mountain.
It's easy to think that this is "just a grab", but there are so many stylistic differences and variations that it can be confusing to know what a "real" method is!
    The key ingredients are:
    - A strong pop followed by pulling the knees up toward the chest.
    - Grab melon (lead hand on the heelside edge between the feet).
    - There has to be a backside shifty that is starting to come around as you grab melon, and then the legs and hips start to move into position.
    - The hips drive forward as the feet start to move back (the base is now facing backward) and the rear leg is extending as much as possible.
    - Those are the moves in the air for the classic pose and it has several steps to create the classic (and respectable) style.

On the ground is where it all starts…
    - In your approach, set up with a heelside turn followed by a toe side turn.
    - Ride up the transition on a lightly engaged toe side edge and set your shoulders closed slightly (lead shoulder pointed toward the toe side edge). This slight shoulder lead sets up the backside shifty.
    - Ollie hard into this trick as it sets up the shifty and helps get your board floating up to you.
    - After you pop, its time to start with all the ingredients listed above—don't forget to counter with the shoulders so that you can control the shifty.
    - After you have the grab and are posing it out with the legs beside, keep looking over your lead shoulder and reach all the way forward with your back hand (this helps the counter).

To keep it simple… Approach on the toes with lead shoulder closed. ollie/pop hard. Knees up grab heels as legs and board start to backside shifty. Drive hips and extend back leg hard to pose the board and grab. Be sure to counter with the shoulders and reach forward with the rear hand.

You can always add your own style or watch some vids to steal someone else's! Happy Methods, Friends!

  2. The Tail Block:
One of the most playful and tech board tricks out there.
Keep in mind that this is a low-speed jib, usually performed on a transition or in the flats (while you're waiting for your buddy that forgot his gloves in the car...).

The Crew at The Burton Academy loves this trick (we practice daily on the carpet and then out on our quarterpipe).

    Remember The Steps…
    - Practice a strong tail press with your back leg bent, and then focus on fully extending that back leg with out falling forward.
    - Practice a quick hop, landing into the position with that posted (straight) back leg pressing the tail.
    - Once you have that down, jump higher and pull the front knee up as you drive the back foot down.
** Remember, the goal is to sweep the tail forward and under your body, so that it stabs hard into the ground, centered under your core.
    - Practice grabbing the topside edge of your board near the nose first. Then, as you build strength and balance with this trick, you can start grabbing nose without your hand slipping off.

Now... Power up that back leg, and Block it!

    The Ollie:
The most versatile and important skill a rider can learn. This trick will help riders access more terrain features and is the basic building block for pretty much everything in freestyle riding. This Ollie teaches a rider how to load energy into the tail of the snowboard and release it to create pop.
The simple breakdown: Get low; rock slightly forward over the front foot; slide the board under the body, bringing the tail in under the core; extend the back leg to load and leverage the tail; pull the back foot and tail off the ground; pull the knees up; and stomp the board down, centered under the body and bend the legs to absorb the landing.

Practice the Ollie every single day, and develop the ability to Ollie off-of and over all sorts of terrain and obstacles around the mountain. Have fun be safe, and Enjoy the Ride!

  5. The Frontside Boardslide
When it comes to riding rails, few tricks look as good and feel as solid as the iconic Frontside Boardslide.

To really lock-in this trick, it’s important to first spend time on the movements in a flat, non-sliding environment (your carpet or the flats at the bottom of the lift).
On flat boxes you can get away with just a little hop, but when you take it to down features you must be able to ollie off your toe-side edge to the feature. The ollie will help align your body and board with the down-sloping angle.

Quick Notes for Learning the Frontside Boardslide:
    - Set a clean topside edge
    - Approach with your lead shoulder pointed slightly toward your topside edge
    - After you pop, help the rotation of the board by pulling your front knee toward your back shoulder and drive that rear leg back behind you. The straighter the back leg, the more you’ll lock it in.
•• Important Tip: When you land on the feature (weight over your front foot), try to feel your back heel driving down while you press your front shin into the tongue of the boot.
    - As the legs rotate, remember that you need to counter with your shoulders and look down at the end of the feature through your armpit (“The Stinky Window of Success”!).
    - Hold pressure over the nose of the board and discipline yourself to nollie out of this trick at the end of the rail. If your shoulders are positioned with clean counter, all you have to do is stare at your landing and unwind your legs to point the board back to straight.

Some of the best-looking Frontboards are locked in over the front foot. Work hard to style this one out by driving that back leg around and holding the press!
