Vann Center for Ethics Forum Series

Shannon Walters McFayden, a 1982 cum laude graduate of Davidson College and currently an Executive in Residence with the McColl School of Business at Queens University of Charlotte, discusses business ethics and workplace issues.

Shannon McFayden has invested over 25 years in helping leaders and organizations drive results. Now a highly respected consultant and executive coach, Shannon is known for her expertise in leadership effectiveness, communications, talent management and organizational culture.

Shannon was Executive Vice President and Head of Human Resources & Corporate Relations for Wachovia Corporation, the nation's 4th largest financial institution in 2008, with $764 billion in assets and 120,000 employees globally. She reported directly to the CEO and was a member of the company's Operating Committee. In this role, she provided leadership for Human Resources, Corporate Communications, Community Relations and Marketing. In addition to her full-time executive responsibilities, she also provided leadership for several corporate initiatives, including Merger Integration, the creation of the company's Vision and Values, a three-year Expense Reduction Program (resulting in a $1 billion annual run-rate reduction), and the Company's diversity efforts. She also served as Senior Staff to the Board's Management Resources and Compensation Committee. In addition, she led the creation of the Company's Talent Assessment and Succession Planning process, and with the CEO, reported to the full Board of Directors annually on this process.

Since retiring, Shannon has been consulting with corporate, small businesses, educational and non-profit leaders. She works on her own, and also in partnership with other consulting firms, including Peter Browning & Associates and Flynn Heath Holt Leadership. She is also serving as a senior advisor with internet analytics and technology company, Red Ventures, rated #1 for Charlotte's Best Places to Work.

Named as one of the "25 Most Powerful Women in Banking" by US Banker, Shannon has also been recognized with the United Negro College Fund's "Maya Angelou Women Who Lead" Award, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund's "Award of Excellence", and the Dress for Success "Paradigm Award".

Shannon also has extensive leadership experience in the community. Currently she chairs the Board of Trustees for Charlotte Country Day School and the Charlotte region of Teach For America. She also serves on the Boards of Central Piedmont Community College and the Levine Museum of the New South, the Board of Visitors for Davidson College, and Advisory Boards for Davidson College's Vann Center for Ethics and Honor and Queens University's Knight School of Communications.

She is also the co-founder of the North Carolina Governor's Conference for Women, and continues to serve on the Advisory Board and the Core Planning Team.
