The MN Craft Beer Project

In January of 2012, the Minnesota law changed to allow breweries to sell beer directly to their customers and the Tap Room became a staple of the MN beer scene. I decided that it was necessary to capture the earliest days of the new era, so I bought a new camera, microphone, and boom stand, then hit the road to get the footage needed to make a film.

The result was Crafted to Last - Minnesota Beer Blossoms. We were successful capturing the heady excitement and outright joy of that moment in Minnesota brewing history. Many of the featured brewers and brewery owners were realizing their dreams and, more importantly, it was working very well.

The film was made in the Cinema Verite style because I reasoned that it best matched the immediacy of the moment. I was not wrong. For the most part, we shot the brewery representatives in pairs and encouraged them to talk to each other. The goal was to get past the staid interview-by-filmmaker model and create a more conversational flow. In the editing phase, I pieced the final cut together into a very long conversation. Other than the few times myself or Juan Nazario had to sit in to pair the brewery owner or brewer, the entire story is told by the people featured in the documentary. No voice-over narration. No narrative guide to tell viewers what the film-maker thought was important. This is their story in their words. I'm proud to have accomplished that goal.

My original idea was to use public domain music and muszak I could create with computer applications. The sound track in the Beer Styles trailer is an example. But as I began the long editing process, I realized that the film deserved an original score. I had met Zack Lozier at Harriet Brewing and very much appreciated his musical chops. I approached him about scoring the film and he agreed. The result is a wonderful complement to the film. It also reflects the local aspects of the small brewery model. Made right here in my city (Minneapolis) with local musicians.

As the film has aged, the MN beer sector has grown and matured. This is when it blossomed. Enjoy!
