1. This video shows a collection of photographs taken by students from the Xolotl secondary school (Xolotla, Pahutalán, Puebla, central Mexico) during 2012 as part of their research and making of a video on the social,cultural, economic and ecological aspects of shade-grown coffee agro-ecosystems and the challenges facing their conservation. The photo essay is included in the student-produced DVD 'Shade Grown Coffee in the Municipality of Pahuatlán, Puebla). The making of this DVD was made possible thanks to the support of the Overbrook Foundation.

    Como parte del DVD “Cafetales bajo sombra en el Municipio de Pahuatlán, Puebla” se integra una galería fitográfica sobre las actividades y talleres realizados durante la filmación y el desarrollo del proyecto ”La importancia de los sistemas tradicionales de producción de café bajo sombra y el manejo de los árboles de jonote en la Sierra Norte de Puebla” por estudiantes del Bachillerato de Xolotl en la comunidad de Xolotla, Municipio de Pahuatlán.   2. En agosto de 2012, alumnos del Bachillerato Xolotl de la comunidad de Xolotla del Estado de Puebla visitaron la comunidad de Zincalco en la Sierra de Zongolica, Veracruz. Los dos pueblos son nahuas y comparten la producción de café bajo sombra, por lo tanto en la visita se platicó se conoció el vivero de café orgánico, las plantaciones y el beneficio, así como todo lo que ocurre y crece alrededor del café, incluyendo la música las danzas y sus tradiciones.

    In August 2012 Xolotl secondary school students from the community of Xolotla (Puebla, central Mexico) travelled on an exchange visit to the community of Zincalco, Sierra de Zongolica, Veracruz. Both communities share a common language and ethnicity (Nahua) and both have been traditionally dependent on shade-grown coffee agroforestry. Among the topics discussed were the advantages of organic certification, different styles of management and production and many of the aspects and issues surrounding the coffee groves, including traditional music, dances and festivals.

This short videotape interview of Don Raúl Tellez who operates the processing plant for coffee harvested from shade-grown coffee groves in the Municipality of Pahutlán, Puebla, was made by secondary school students from the community of Xolotla, and was included in the student-produced DVD on shade-grown coffee in the region ('Cafetales bajo sombra en el Municipio de Pahuatlán, Puebla')

Este video fue realizado por estudiantes del Bachillerato Xolotl de la comunidad de Xolotla, municipio de Pahuatlán con la finalidad de explorar y mostrar la importancia social, cultural, económica y ecológica de los cafetales bajo sombra. Para realizar este trabajo, entablaron conversaciones con sus padres, abuelos y cafeticultores, así reconocieron diferentes aspectos y cambios relacionados con los cafetales bajo sombra y con los saberes tradicionales y la riqueza cultural de los pueblos nahuas y ñañhus que habitan en su municipio. Este video forma parte del proyecto ”La importancia de los sistemas tradicionales de producción de café bajo sombra y el manejo de los árboles de jonote en la Sierra Norte de Puebla.” Este video se realizó gracias al apoyo de la Fundación Overbrook.     This video was made by students from the Secondary School of Xolota in the community of Xolotla (Pahuatlán, Puebla). It aims to document and reflect on the social, cultural, economic, and ecological importance of shade-grown coffee forest groves (cafetales). Students interviewed their parents, grand-parents and coffee farmers in order to first gain a better understanding of the different aspects and changes associated with these spaces, and to familiarize themselves with the traditiional knowledge and cultural richness of the nahua and ñañhu peoples that live in the municipality. The video itself is part of PPI's project "The Importance of Traditional Shade Grown Cofee Agroforests and the Managagement of Trema micrantha in the Sierra Norte de Puebla.     This video is aimed at farmers from the higher elevation forests of the Sierra de Zongolica, Veracruz, Mexico, who for a number of years now have attempted, with various degress of success, to cultivate and manage trees for timber within their agricultural plots. Available in Nahuatl and Spanish versions, the video covers several general and technical aspects relating to managing timber trees effectively in order to produce high-grade timber that can either be used to meet local needs for materials or sold as an additional source of income.
