A powerful modern retelling of Shakespeare’s masterpiece, created for Scottish Ballet by Dutch National Ballet resident choreographer Krzysztof Pastor.
The story, as timeless as love itself, is performed against a striking multi-media backdrop and is set to Prokofiev’s formidably dramatic score, performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Scottish Ballet dancers are at their best, bringing these iconic roles to life with emotional intensity and breathtaking performances.
“Breathtaking – a triumph.” Sunday Herald

A behind the scenes look at the upcoming production of A Village Romeo and Juliet by Frederick Delius at the 61st Wexford Festival Opera with behind the scenes footage as well as interviews with Rory McDonald (Conductor), Stephen Medcalf (Director), Jessica Muirhead (Vreli), John Bellemer (Sali) and David Stout (The Dark Fiddler).
Written between 1899 and 1901, A Village Romeo and Juliet was the fourth of Delius’s six operas and is generally regarded as his finest. Sali and Vreli, his Romeo and Juliet, have the misfortune to live in a small village community in Switzerland, the children of farmers who are at loggerheads over the ownership of a worthless piece of land that by rights should belong to a man known as the Dark Fiddler. Forbidden by their feuding fathers to marry each other, Sali and Vreli are forced to run away together. The Dark Fiddler tries to persuade them to join him and his friends and live together freely. They reject this lifestyle but their guilt at betraying their families leads them to choose a brief, glorious, moment of love, which culminates in their exultant acceptance of death.
Delius’s passionate engagement with the story inspired him to compose rapturous, rhapsodic music that depicts the defencelessness and innocence of the lovers, their youthful idealism and the intense expression of their love. The opera includes the celebrated orchestral interlude, The Walk to the Paradise Garden.
Cork Opera House together with the renowned Cork based theatre company, Corcadorca, are joining forces this October to present a new production of one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays – Romeo and Juliet. Corcadorca’s Romeo and Juliet will present a modern approach and will build on last year’s success of The Winter’s Tale, also presented in collaboration with Cork Opera House. This play embodies the romance and tragedy of life and love and inspires us to question our own destiny.

Declarations of Love
As ever Corcadorca is in love with the idea of bringing theatre to all of Cork (and beyond.) As part of the production of Romeo and Juliet we have planned a way to include the people of Cork in every night of the play. Soon, ballot boxes will be appearing around Cork and we're hoping that you can provide us with your Declarations of Love.
The ballot boxes will be appearing in numerous places including many libraries, where you can write us your ideas and thoughts on the wondrous thing that is love. These Declarations of Love will then be included in every night of the Romeo and Juliet production in the Cork Opera House.
Together Corcadorca and you can bring not only Shakespeare's idea of love but all our understandings of love to thousands of theatre goers from all over the country.
