Often called Shakespeare's most intimate tragedy, Othello is a timely examination of race, politics, jealousy and the power of persuasion. An esteemed general in the service of Venice, Othello has recently wed Desdemona, against the wishes of her father, a senator. Their married bliss is short-lived, however, when one of Othello's close military aides, Iago, sets out to destroy the couple. Passed over for promotion in favor of the charismatic Michael Cassio and doubtful of his wife's fidelity, Iago orchestrates the downfall of everyone around him using keen psychological manipulation.
In this fast-paced 90-minute cutting of the play, director Alison Bomber, Senior Text and Voice Coach at the RSC, will work with nine M.F.A. actors to explore the depths of this brilliant tragedy in which nothing is ever as simple as black and white.
Music: "Mars Bringer of War" from Holst's "The Planets" recorded by Skidmore College Orchestra.
