HIT AND RUN HISTORY

225 years ago, the ship Columbia Rediviva and her consort, the sloop Lady Washington, felt an easterly wind. Quickly weighing anchor, they caught the one chance they had to escape the backwater of Brett Harbor. This was the later stop before rounding the dreaded passage of Cape Horn and the unknown Pacific Ocean.

That same wind kept the crew of Hit and Run History from getting to the once-a-week flight home from the Falklands. With limited communications and still only in the small farming settlement of Port Howard, the Gumshoe Historians need to get back to the civilization of Port Stanley and try to find a way back to their families before the week is out.

The past isn’t dead -- it’s all around us, found in regular, everyday places. You just need to know where to look.

With a crew gathered from coastal towns in New England, we take history out of the library and down to the street-level.

We check out the players, the places they lived, and hear from people who know them best. We get dirty. We make mistakes. And we have fun.

Hit and Run History is the centerpiece of WGBH-Boston's History page - wgbh.org/hitandrunhistory.
