  2. Veterinarian Dr. Patrick McHale discusses the symptoms and treatment options available for treating feline skin allergies (see http://www.cat-health-guide.org/feline-skin-allergies.html). When a cat is presented to a veterinarian for a skin problem, a veterinarian immediately looks for the small black specks associated with flea allergy dermatitis. If fleas are identified, a spot on and other treatments are recommended to eliminate and prevent future infestations. If the cat doesn't have fleas or is on a flea preventative, other causes are explored such as an inhaled allergy such as pollen or a food allergy, Any food component can cause an allergy, even fish! If food is suspected, an owner will need to provide a simple diet and then add back food ingredients until the cause of the cat skin allergy is identified. If the cause cannot be identified, the veterinarian may recommend a hypoallergenic diet.
