Innovation Cafe

The Golden Horseshoe Biosciences Network is excited to start up a new session of Innovation Cafés with our second National Biotechnology Week special. Those with a green thumb are going to love this topic.

Everyone who has a home garden is likely to have a section of tomatoes in there. Why tomatoes? They are nutritious containing high levels of vitamin A and vitamin C, and they contain Lycopene, an agent in tomatoes that may be a preventative ingredient against cardiovascular disease and certain cancers.

Tomatoes are not the hardest vegetable to grow, but put them up in space on the planet Mars and you may have a different story. Researchers and NASA experts are beginning to simulate the atmosphere of Mars to study the possibility of growing plants on different planets. At this café we will have Michael Dixon from the University of Guelph speaking. He is one of the project leaders of Tomatosphere, a study involving more than 12,000 classrooms in Canada and the United States to see whether Mars atmosphere treated tomato seeds can indeed grow.
