1. About Childcare.
The care work philosophy centres around giving the children a voice and to take care of their immediate needs, while providing training and opportunities to make informed choices for a better future. We partner with local schools, orphanages, and vocational training centres to help children at all stages of development.

The volunteers will be involved with the children in various games and learning exercises to create interest, develop their physical health and potential, as well as assisting with school work and extra-curricular activities.

These venues are all in need of renovation and repair. Many groups undertake development in conjunction with their childcare volunteering.

  2. Join us in developing a community in need with our building projects in Thailand. Since 2003 Starfish has taken a holistic approach to development work by addressing the needs of a community and working with local governments and organisations to create effective solutions. Recently Starfish completed a water pipe project that provided essential H20 to over 400 people on the border of Myanmar and Thailand. Can you join us in getting your hands dirty? Our big project at the moment is building the Dream Project Foundation's (http://www.dreamprojectfoundation.org) first children's home to house around 100 children who are at risk of being trafficked. Get involved today and you could be the one carrying the shovel, mixing the cement, painting the walls and seeing the smiles of the people who so need our help. More about building volunteers:
If you're the type of person who wants to get really stuck in, get their hands dirty and really make a difference then this is the project for you. Right now we have two building projects in two very different locations. Building volunteers need no experience or qualifications in any aspect of construction. Just a willingness to get stuck in and work hard is all you need.

PROJECT 1: Location; Sangklaburi, northwest Thailand. Project; Building a DREAM
Undoubtedly the biggest project Starfish has ever undertaken and one that we are all particularly proud of. We are urgently searching for as many volunteers as possible to help us build a new orphanage and childcare centre in the town of Sangklaburi, northeast Thailand. Situated on the banks of a huge reservoir, Sangklaburi is just 20kms from the border with Myanmar (formerly Burma) and home to a real mixture of ethnic and immigrant communities. Due to the number of immigrants human trafficking is a very serious issue and one that Starfish is working hard to eradicate. With a new home for the forgotten children of the area, we know that is a good start. You don't need to be a builder to build.

PROJECT 2: Location; Surin, northeast Thailand. Project; renovate a rural childcare centre
Situated in the grounds of a monastery the Beung Bow Oon childcare centre is in serious need of redevelopment, making safer and more hygienic. In addition, we are currently building an organic farm at the centre that will teach children about farming and once grown the produce will be used for cooking the children's meals. Any vegetables that aren't used will be sold at the local markets to raise money to support the centre. We are in search of volunteers who are looking to get stuck in, and as with all of our projects this is being fully-funded by our volunteers fees.

Whatever your background, age, experience you are both welcome and needed to join either of these projects. All you need to ask yourself is how long can you stay and how much of a difference do you want to make. No experience is required, the work is as labour-intensive as you want to make it and as with all Starfish projects, you will be accompanied by our team throughout your placement.

Lay the foundations for a new community center. Work with our engineers to bring water to a village. Dig the footings for our DREAM project network. Work with monks in rural villages to bring stability to their community. We have community development projects all over Asia, do something different today and be the difference. You don't have to be a builder, to BUILD!

Our building work is hugely rewarding, leaving behind a tangible resource which will benefit others for many years to come.

Our big request for 2012 -- 2013 is as many volunteers as possible join our Dream House Build Project in Thailand. Where we presently have 37 kids all in need of new, hygienic and safe accommodation With arrival dates every month there is surely a date to suit you.

We plan to lay foundations, begin to construct the walls, build toilets and showers, kitchens, bedrooms and then start on the grounds to create a learning centre, communal sitting area for meal times and so on. This work is only possible with the help of our volunteers both physically and financially. Quite simply the more volunteers who join the project, the more funds are available to build a bigger, better, safer and more hygienic location.

Whether you choose to help build a Dream or any other project, you will love every minute. It really is building for non-builders, don't be shy and get involved.

    More about Teaching with Starfish.
Join our volunteer teaching programs and teach English to some of the friendliest and welcoming children you will ever meet.

As a volunteer teacher you will have the opportunity to teach in orphanages, primary schools & secondary schools, as well as teaching children with special needs.

Whether on a gap year, presently studying, a mature volunteer or looking for an alternative holiday you can make a real difference as a volunteer teacher. The majority of our volunteers work in primary schools teaching children aged between 6 and 12 years old. For those experienced teachers, it may be possible to arrange placements in secondary schools, teaching adults or even teaching children with disabilities. Unlike schools in the west there are no special classes for children with learning difficulties.

You will encounter challenges when volunteering but the rewards are clear. In all locations previous volunteers have left behind a number of teaching aids to help you with your lesson planning and our team of coordinators are always available to offer advice and support.

By becoming a volunteer teacher you will give these children the opportunity to learn English with a native speaker. A competency in English opens so many more doors later in life. With tourism being the No1 industry in these three countries many of the large hotel and tour operators demand a certain level of written and spoken English. All international companies with operations in these countries expect the same. By learning and discovering English these children have their first step on a real ladder to success.

  4. Carbon Offsetting

We are all enjoying the joy of long haul travel, the ability to be anywhere in the world within 24 hrs. Never have so many people had so much opportunity, or so many people taken advantage of this opportunity. Thailand receives over 15 Million foreign visitors a year. But everything has a price. The carbon emissions are out of control, you combine tourism and industry and it’s frightening.

However imagine everyone did their bit? If we all offset our emissions and simultaneously restored the world’s forest and jungles….we could achieve so much.

Starfish has formed a partnership with two of Thailand Government Departments; namely the Department of Forests and the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources. With your help we can restore Thailand’s inland and coastal forests.

Off set your carbon footprint from as little as 5 GBP. Or from as little as 25 GBP while you are in Thailand spend a day planting your own trees.

All of our forest restoration projects are verified by Thailand’s Government Departments and protected by law.
