This is a proof of concept of our new virtual exhibitor system, developed for museum and other cultural heritage items.

The Lady of Elche was 3D reconstructed departing only from studio photographs using Image-Based Modelling methods, and enhanced with characterization of surface reflectance properties (BRDF/BSDF capture). This provides improved micro-surface detail and the proper response of the light to the changing illumination and observation angles.

The visualization is now working in real-time in consumer grade graphics card, using a multi-layer texture with custom pixel shaders. This video shows here slightly slowly than the original due to the extra compressing effort of the screen capture process.

This is the previous stage in development before the implementing a dedicated web service to remotely display and study any piece of artwork. The whole development is based on a variety of Open Source projects (OpenGL, Blender, Meshlab, Bundler).

This new 3D reconstruction technology allows to capture cultural heritage item departing only from a few photographs taken in place in just a few minutes with a calibrated portable camera. The resulting model is highly detailed in shape and texture, including a realistic reflectance model and the possibility of re-illumination for enhanced inspection.
