We use gardens for cultivation – tending to lawns, plants and flowers, but also growing fruit and vegetables. From this field of domestic, homespun activity, I have cultivated a piece of video art. The sounds and images in this work are made from photographs and sound recordings made in the morning of June 21st, 2013. These documents of a moment in time, however, have undergone data-processing operations to remove, or at least mollify, their representational nature. What remains is a ‘cooked’, technologically constructed mélange of colour and noise that perhaps retain a flavour of the original source ingredients.
The images are processed using Quartz Composer and Motion. The visual data is imported into Max/MSP/Jitter to generate the sounds. The frame is divided into 9 columns, with each column of image data in turn driving the Max patch. The 9 audio files generated were mixed down and mastered in Pro Tools.
