  2. ☼ The first Norwegian version of the international open source art project Bring Your Own Beamer occurred in Oslo on Thursday 21 June 2012. We dropped four shipping containers on location at Sukkerbiten Oslo. Each artist could project whatever they wanted, wherever they wanted, on what ever was in the space at the time.

    Background:

BYOB Bring Your Own Beamer (created by Rafaël Rozendaal) - is series of one-night-exhibitions around the world exploring the medium of projection. The idea is simple: Find a place, invite many artists, and ask them to bring their projectors.

The first BYOB event took place on July 20th 2010 in Berlin. Since then there have been over 80 editions globally. Being a part of BYOB is a great opportunity to get international exposure, be inspired and have fun!

"Featuring an array of artists that span across disciplines, BYOB has an open structure that allows for impulse and experimentation, while placing responsibility for the physical format and engagement of the exhibition directly in the hands in the participants. The individual works will often overlap and sometimes even merge, producing an environment that is more than the sum of its parts."

    ☞ simple terms and guidelines:
✔ open to anyone - spread the word!
✔ bring your own beamer/video projector, video playing device and extension cord
✔ we *only* provide power sockets access
✔ find your own spot on the day
    ✔ plug and play
✔ places allocated on a first come, first-served basis,

  3. Documentation of a 3 channels video installation commissioned by The Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad, Marlene Madison curator. The work was presented at W2 Community Arts Building, 112 West Hastings Street, Vancouver.

    15:00 loop | 2010

The Downtown Eastside is the oldest neighbourhood in Vancouver; it is also the most run-down. This historic area is infamous for being plagued by social problems due to poverty. Before falling prey to serious urban decay, it has known brighter days, and was even the city’s business hub until the 1980s. Derelict for over twenty years, in more recent ones, it has started to be sought after again. The Downtown Eastside is undergoing a major mutation —witness the newly renovated buildings and the constructions sites that now dot the area.

The coming of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games is accelerating the Downtown Eastside’s transformation by heightening real estate speculation and gentrification; new condo towers and big box stores are appearing. The revamping of the neighbourhood seems more responsive to the expectations of people who are better-off. Tensions between real estate developers and members of the community are palpable, with fears of a form of implicit "social cleansing".

It is striking that the history of the Downtown Eastside began in destruction and disappearance. In 1886, soon after the city was incorporated, the Great Vancouver Fire swept down on the neighbourhood and razed almost all of it to the ground. The video installation Fire with Fire recalls this troubled period of Vancouver’s history. It also alludes to the neighbourhood’s present conditions by reminding us that many lives have been consumed there, worn down by years of homelessness, drug use, street prostitution, and violence.
