We had been trying to find a chance to film another video with our friend Dave Whitty for some time, then we figured why not make it our first video of 2013. We headed out to Mount Pearl one afternoon and took a stroll around The Glacier. Accompanied by Joesie Palmer on violin, Dave performs his tune Slow em' Down
On a beautiful fall morning in Halifax just before we began all of our filming with Halifax Pop Explosion, we met up with Rose Cousins. She happened to bring along a fantastic group of friends, Stewart Legere, Don Brownrigg and Tanya Davis. After a short drive out to Long Lake, we hopped across the highway and headed into the woods. Within the brilliant sunlight amongst the trees and leaves, Rose Cousins performs her song "What I See" accompanied by accordion, shakers, rock drumming, and of course three beautiful harmonies.
On visit home from Toronto to record his new album, we met up with Dave Whitty the day before taking off back to the big city. After a little walk downtown, we head into a parking garage down on the harbour where Dave decided to perform his new song " The Times Like These ". Please pay no attention to the welder you can hear working away in the background. I know its a bit of a throw off, but this video is to good to throw out because of a bit of background noise.
This short documentary film tells a story of the Boston/Cambridge music scene - through the experience of Canadian songwriter Rose Cousins. It was made in the hope of highlighting the players and songwriters who are Boston's lifeblood. Venues like Club Passim and The Lizard Lounge. Community events that bring musicians together like SubRosa, Cutting Edge of the Campfire and the Three Mile Island Retreat. The magic that's been happening at Q Division Studios. With this group of people. In this moment in time.
In the spring of 2011, Rose Cousins traveled to Boston to record her new album WE HAVE MADE A SPARK. It was a drive she had done many times since she started visiting Boston in 2002. First to see the songwriters and musicians that inspired her, and later to perform in the city herself as she launched her international touring career. The vibrant community of songwriters and singers in Boston, and the surrounding neighborhoods of Cambridge and Somerville, were quick to adopt Cousins. With her quick wit, hardworking drive, collaborative spirit, heartbreaking songs, vocal prowess, and immediate sincerity, she fit in right away. She became "one of the gang."
WE HAVE MADE A SPARK was made with friends and collaborators Zachariah Hickman (producer) and Austin Nevins (who both play in Josh Ritter's Royal City Band), songwriters Rose Polenzani, Kris Delmhorst, Mark Erelli, Jennifer Kimball, Laura Cortese, Amy Correia, Ana Egge, Edie Carey, members of Session Americana Billy Beard and Dinty Child, and multi-instrumentalists Sean Staples and Charlie Rose.
