Save Our Shores

  1. Save Our Shores is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit marine conservation organization in Santa Cruz, California.

Our mission is caring for the marine environment through ocean awareness, advocacy, and citizen action.

Over the last 30 years, Save Our Shores has been responsible for key accomplishments such as preventing offshore oil drilling in Central Coast waters, helping to establish the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, preventing local cruise ship pollution, and bringing together diverse stakeholders to find common solutions to ocean issues. Today we focus on educating youth about our watersheds, tackling plastic pollution on our beaches and rivers, advocating for plastic-free communities, managing Annual Coastal Cleanup Day in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties, running our nationally renowned DockWalker program, and providing our community with educated and inspired Sanctuary Stewards!

Our three core initiatives are Plastic Pollution, Ocean Awareness, and Clean Boating. So whether you find us advocating in the community for local bans on single-use plastic bags and polystyrene containers, or tackling cigarette butt litter with our BaitTanks and No Butts About It campaign, Save Our Shores is busy protecting our most valuable resource here on the Central Coast - the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

  3. The 2009-2010 fifth grade class of Mount Madonna School is proud to present "Our Big Blue Landfill: And What We Can Do About It." The movie you are about to watch is a result of a collaborative effort. It is about educating and preventing ocean pollution. The class researched five topics: waste in America, landfills, single use plastics, ocean pollution and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. With the support of Save Our Shores, this class worked dilligently and enthusiastically to create this movie. We hope you will join us to consciously begin to practice reducing our impact on the ocean.
