For DoP Ole Birkeland; Alf Tremontin and I got to do plenty of Steadicam on this cult series "Utopia" but this shot I got to shoot is truly awesome! The car crash itself was shot with a RED epic in the back of a car and genuinely crashed as you see on camera. I was then tasked with reaching the MK-V AR rig into the middle of the car and matching the crash cams frame for a VFX takeover. Then trying to pull the camera out of the car smoothly and covering the gruesome shooting sequence in one take whilst making full use of the AR's considerable boom. The final takes with squids the camera went far wider and far lower.

We had the door removed from the car. This making off is from one of the rehearsals before we started using live blanks.

  2. Voyeur, hunter and investigator are just a few of the roles that have characterized the photographer when depicted in modern cinema. In Photographers, hundreds of scenes involving this now ubiquitous character are remixed and re-sequenced to expose the clichés, tropes and accidental truisms associated with the medium. As the sole subject of the film, the photographer is turned from observer to observed.

This is BlackLab's third film montage, following Trawling the Visual Wreckage and Cosmodrome.

  4. The longest shot in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" runs 94 seconds. It's a masterclass in camera movement, framing, staging, lighting, set design, wardrobe and ultimately...storytelling through visuals.

In my post vashivisuals.com/the-long-take/ I discus how Steven Spielberg and his editor Michael Kahn use economy and elegance to achieve 2 long takes that run almost 2 minutes each.

Jonathan Ochmann (vimeo.com/patchflyer) kindly shared with me an amazing animatic he created to explicitly show what Spielberg and legendary DP Douglas Slocombe did on the day to capture this shot.

So much happens in 94 seconds that you never even realize there is not a cut in its duration. It's magic...
