Japan's northernmost island, Hokkaido, was once crisscrossed with an extensive network of railway lines. However by the time the 1980s rolled around, decades of depopulation and lost industry finally caught up to them, with all but a handful shutting down.

This past summer we traveled up north with our bicycles and spent a month cycle touring throughout Hokkaido, searching out and following these decaying symbols of Hokkaido's past.

In this first episode (of a planned four), we follow the Haboro Line, which ran on the northwest coast of Hokkaido, connecting the city of Rumoi in the south to Haboro in the north.

Leaving the end of the Haboro Line in Horonobe, Hokkaido, we head further north to Rishiri and Rebun islands--the two furthest north outlying islands in Japan.

Eventually heading back to the mainland, we visit Wakkanai Station, the northernmost train station in the country.

From there we start following the Tempoku Line, a 148.9 km line that closed down in 1989 and used to connect Japan's northernmost city of Wakkanai to the northeastern coast of Hokkaido, eventually heading inland and terminating in the villiage of Otoineppu, which at 850 people is the smallest independent administrative district in Hokkaido.

And watch out for the bugs!

We head even further inland, to Nayoro City and the beginning of the Shinmei Line. The Shinmei Line was a 122.8 km line in the central area of Hokkaido, connecting the small city of Nayoro to the even smaller city of Fukagawa further south.

It's the final line! Wait... it's the final two lines!
First we follow the Shihoro Line, home to a collection of registered Hokkaido cultural artifacts. From there we finish off the trip by trading our bicycles for a train ticket and heading to the coast to see the very first train line on the island.
