This short documentary piece was created in order to understand how I felt about New York City as a child growing up in Asmara, Eritrea. The piece is in the format of a personal autoethnographical documentary.
Looking For The Sun is a feature-length documentary which features the former women freedom fighters who participated in Eritrea's 30 year armed independence war against Ethiopia.
This documentary allows these Tegadelti [freedom fighters in Tigrinya] to the tell their own personal stories about the role they played in the struggle and their experiences in their own words. I believe that the contributions and sacrifices made by these women is something that the world needs to know more about and truly appreciate.
Eritrean women played a very prominent role in the Eritrean independence struggle and forced the male fighters, and later the population at large, to accept them on equal footing with men. Women helped transformed and shape Eritrean society by their role not only as freedom fighters but also as educators, health officers, commanders and also as mothers, aunts and sisters....their contributions to the development of Eritrea is something that the world should know and learn from. I hope by that by viewing the QuickTime trailer and listening to the personal story of Terhas Iyassu and her family, you will understand and appreciate the role that these brave women have played in the liberation of Eritrea and its long term effects on the creation of progressive legal and social rights for Eritrean women as well as its overall influence on society.
