1. Throughout the past year we have been visiting people that conserve their lands to understand what motivates them and based on that create collaboration schemes to make their life projects more feasible. We have been producing these videos that inspire to travel around Peru and support the people whose stories we are sharing with a larger community.

Based on these stories we have also been able to push for policy reforms that create incentives for people that decide to conserve their lands. In total we have supported more than 150 voluntary conservation projects that conserve more than 8,000 km2. This is the video from the first route we launched: the Desert Route.

  2. Atiquipa is an emerald oasis in the middle of the Peruvian desert, a unique form of ecosystem called "lomas". Here we encountered people like Roberto and Julieta de la Torre, who capture water from the mists and work to replant the forests. In 2011, the area was declared a Private Conservation Area, protecting the largest extent of lomas in the country. Some of the best olive oil in Peru is produced here.

This video is part of the campaign Conservamos por Naturaleza of the Peruvian Society for Environmental Law (SPDA). We seek to promote a cultural movement to make people live more sustainably and closer to nature. There are many ways to support our campaign and the people behind these initiatives.

  5. (Abajo el texto en castellano)

The Rimarachín family has lived in a remote region of Amazonas in northern Peru for decade. The cloud forest they live in is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world, and to protect the area they have created the Berlin Forest Private Conservation Area.

However, the area surrounding their land is facing a grave theat. Deforestation has decimated the cloud forest and the species living within it. Only kilometers away are one of the last strands, five hectares in size, of intact forest where a single troop of yellow-tailed woolly monkeys live. The species is one of the most endangered species on the planet and are endemic to this region of Peru.

The last six monkeys in the troop are in serious danger. Poachers recently killed five monkeys, and they are trapped in a five-hectare patch of forest because the surrounding land has been converted to pastures for grazing. To make matters worse, the owner of the five hectares is considering cutting down the forest to create more pasture.

Yet, the monkeys can be saved. For only $10,000, the owner is willing to rent the land for twenty years for conservation. He will sign a legally binding contract agreeing not to cut down any trees or otherwise disturb the forests or the monkeys. At the same time, the agreement allows for the land to be used for research and educational purposes.

Please support our efforts to protect this cloud forest. For more information or to donate visit: indiegogo.com/projects/help-leyda-save-a-family-of-yellow-tailed-woolly-monkeys.
