1. I made this animation for a website. I did it in the classic cartoon style — you'll notice the black border lines around all the drawings. For this video, I drew out the storyboard based on the client's script, I designed and animated all the characters and my wife created the music track.

  2. I filmed and edited this video as a promotion for an organization's website.

  3. For this video I fine-tuned the client's script, drew the storyboard, recorded the voiceover, created the animations and synthesized the music.

  4. This is a sample video from my own wedding. I wasn't involved in the filming process but I did all the editing, syncing the footage from two cameras and using the best angle that captured the moment. The shots that were filmed outdoors needed quite a bit of color enhancement and brightness reduction. The full length of the finished video was over two and a half hours long, but for simplicity, I've chosen a five minute clip featuring footage that was taken after the ceremony during the wedding party photo shoot.

  5. This is one of 30 such videos that I edited for a lawyer's blog.

Let me take a moment to say a little bit about myself. My name is John Howshall and I live in Western Washington with my lovely wife, Eireen.

I've been doing video production for about 14 years. I started out making short films with the family camcorder, which involved myself playing all parts of the cast. I even used a hand written credit roll which I filmed for the end of each movie.

I worked my way into video editing using computer software such as Final Cut Pro and Motion (some of the leading editing software used in the making of feature films and other productions worldwide). Through the use of this software I learned blue and green screen editing (for the use of superimposing one image over another).

For a time, I was an intern at Global Net Productions, a company specializing in the production of documentaries. While there, I learned many tricks of the trade, from lighting a scene and operating a camera to editing the finished piece.

More recently, I began doing freelance production — filming and editing, as well as animating. This job requires much creative thinking, and I'm constantly challenging myself to make better and more interesting videos. It's what I love doing — creating a piece that grabs the viewer's attention so much that they're completely caught up in the message and forget they were even watching a video.
