1. Panels for a new high-tech shelter created at the University of Alabama at Birmingham have passed the National Storm Shelter Association’s tornado threat test.
In the NSSA test, 15-pound two-by-fours fired from a pressure cannon were unable to penetrate the panels, made of recycled materials, in a dozen attempts. The wooden missiles hit the panels at 100 mph, the speed at which projectiles typically exit a tornado funnel spinning at more than 200 mph. Such a storm would rate EF5 on the Enhanced Fujita scale and be capable of leveling well-built homes.

  4. A massive task is set before John Fields: locating, photographing and archiving nearly 700 pieces of artwork in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s permanent collection. The mission is to first chronicle each and every painting, drawing, sketch, print and sculpture, to develop an online catalog of all the works, available for viewing any time by students and the public. Fields is working on the project during the summer, while the gallery is closed. He first hangs the work level on a white wall, photographs it, then corrects and balances the electronic image before recording all the vital information — year it was created, artist, title, medium and other important details. He’s trained to photograph works behind glass, which can be difficult.

  5. The summer camp was part of the Healthy Happy Kids program run by the University of Alabama at Birmingham Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center. This camp is an offshoot of the year round HHK program they run in Birmingham City Schools. The focus of each is the effort to reduce childhood obesity in minority and underserved children through a nutrition and physical activity curriculum. They made a special snack for the First Lady on Wednesday.
