1. In order to avoid an X rating, 40 minutes of gay S&M footage was rumored to be cut and destroyed from the 1980 film, “Cruising.” Inspired by the mythology of this controversial film, filmmakers James Franco and Travis Mathews collaborate to imagine their own lost footage.

Amid the backdrop of a frenzied film set actor Val Lauren reluctantly agrees to take the lead in the film. Val is repeatedly forced to negotiate his boundaries during scenes on and “off camera,” as unsimulated gay sex happens around him. The film itself is constructed as a play with boundaries remaining queer in subject and form. As much a film about filmmaking as it is about an exploration of sexual and creative freedom, “Interior. Leather Bar.” defies easy categorization.

  3. After the San Francisco and Berlin episodes of his “In Their Room” series about gay men and their bedrooms, in the third installment Travis Mathews introduces a handful of gay men living in the UK capital. As they are getting ready for a casual hook-up, they open up about their expectations and share their innermost desires and thoughts on sex, romance and relationships.

Mathews' work benefits from his ability to strike a unique connection with his characters, who get comfortable with their physical as well as emotional nudity in front of the camera. With a tender insight and a striking eye for seemingly small but significant details, he sensitively compiles a mosaic of male sexuality, intimacy and vulnerability. 5. "You are so cute, there is no one like you in the whole wide world!/ Is there really no one like me?/ of course not, you are one and only!/ But why is there no one like me?/ Because everyone is one and only/ I don’t want to be the only one like me in the whole wide world/ Why not?/ Because that means I am alone".

This childish fundamental acknowledgment of solitude is the mental burden that vibrates in the core of Gravity and Grace; a burden that like gravity itself is omnipresent. The performers on stage struggle with the simplest, yet hardest task of all: carrying oneself. Looking for comfort and a way to relief pain, they have to unlearn loneliness; to learn how to be carried. In a doubtful and yet optimistic presentation they physically manifest the doomed-to-fail individual struggle for independence; wondering: what kind of grace can they really offer each other?
