  3. An exhibition by third-year Photography Bachelor students further to a workshop led by French photographer Thomas Mailaender.
The artist and the students spent a full week in complete isolation in a forest of the Wild West of Lausanne. Once over the shock of the lack of usual comforts such as running water, electricity or heating, the young photographers embraced this new lifestyle which fuelled their imagination, leading them to produce a huge number of images.

Still shots of monuments, vestiges, remains of a country’s History appear one after the other. An abandoned, neglected past; yet Belgium has a colonial past indeed. It is the history of King Leopold II, but it is also my history.
The intertwinement of my family memoirs and the history of Belgium in this film allows creating a new stage for my investigative work on the Belgian Congo with the aim to understand and making people understand what happened
    100 years ago.

+ More

From artistic photography to commissioned work, via still-life, portrait or fashion, this programme is for students passionate about photography as a medium and wishing to sharpen their eye and refine their technique. Prospective, pragmatic and experimental, this Bachelor course is provided in the framework of the Visual Communication Department, which concurrently offers crossover courses and projects enabling students to acquire multidisciplinary skills (graphic design, interaction design, film).

Through courses and workshops provided by major actors on the international scene, the students become seasoned in the various fields–editorial, documentary and artistic–of photography. Involvement in exhibitions, publications or assignments commissioned by institutions provides an actual immersion into the labour world. The students also benefit from a wide range of theoretical courses and multidisciplinary conferences on the ECAL premises.

The skills and projects acquired throughout the curriculum serve to produce a portfolio to the highest professional standards. Graduates have many opportunities–applied or free photography projects, but also artistic direction or creating moving images. They may also enrich some features of their chosen discipline by doing a Master Art Direction at ECAL or an equivalent programme in another institution.
