In 2011, 84 countries participated in the Venice Biennale’s 54th International Art Exhibition, which drew more than 440,000 visitors. The opening weeks of the exhibition see the “who’s who” of the art world assemble in Venice. Artists, museum directors, curators, galleries, collectors and journalists from the most influential global newspapers, magazines, television and the internet are drawn to the Biennale to take the pulse of international contemporary art and see the most important artists practicing in the world today.
For the 55th edition in 2013 the Everyday Goalie missed all the opening parties and hobnobbing, but still went to Venice with the objective of performing in front of the Canadian Pavillion, built in 1958 when it was inaugurated for the 29th Biennale. Echoing the spiral of a nautilus shell, the glass and wood pavilion was designed by the Milanese architecture firm BBPR and built under the auspices of the National Gallery of Canada with support from the Government of Canada. The official Canadian representative was Shary Boyle.
Though not an official part of the Biennale, and despite being denied access to the Giardini with his goaltending gear, Everyday Goalie was able to perform in front of the Canadian Pavilion, though with fewer onlookers than intended.
