The Orchestra is an extraordinary new app from Touch Press that will delight anyone with even a passing interest in classical music. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the world-renowned Philharmonia performing extended extracts from eight works representing three centuries of symphonic music. The app allows real-time selection of multiple video and audio tracks, along with an automatically synchronised score and dynamic graphical note-by-note visualisation of each piece as it is played. The result is an immersive environment for exploring the music and all the instruments of the orchestra.
Before I started doing Graphic Design I was a musician. Perhaps that's one reason I'm attracted to work that is musically driven, specifically stuff that tries to show how music sounds. Two recent examples that come to mind are I'll Be Gone by KORB & Giant Steps by Michal Levy.
Rather than representing the notes in an abstract way I took a more literal approach of using the actual notes & letters, bringing a typographic element into the mix. Once I found the right song (Interplay by Bill Evans) I started to look at some of those great jazz album designs from the 50's & 60's and that's really the aesthetic I was trying to capture in 73 Notes.

Brief: Make up an imaginary TV series about "5 Childhood Heroes" and create a 25-second long opening sequence.
I decided to make my 5 heroes the 5 musical genres that inspired me.
