“Help-A-House” is an original program created by LaCasa, Inc., (Goshen, Indiana) to fix up and winterize the homes of low-income residents. Local donations combine with City of Goshen Community Development Block Grant funds -- and hundreds of volunteers -- to allow low-income, often elderly and disabled, homeowners to stay in their own homes. Volunteers work with experienced contractors to repair and replace windows, roofs, wheelchair ramps and more each year on the first Saturday in May. 2012 was the twenty-second year for the Help-A-House program.
This is the visual story of the Middlebury Street Mural Project in Goshen, Indiana. Following the 2011 NeighborWorks Community Leadership Institute (CLI) in Kansas City, residents from Goshen worked with the community development corporation, LaCasa, Inc., to complete a community mural on a well-traveled street in their neighborhood. The CLI team worked with a range of individuals and organizational partners to raise funds for and complete the mural titled "Elements" (designed by Goshen artist, Leah Borden). These uplifting scenes of community unity are set to the music of The Goldmine Pickers, who generously lent their talents to this project.
