1. This story was created as part of a Literacy Residency led by Storyteller and Teaching Artist Katie Knutson in Mrs. Brennan's 2012-13 Kindergarten class at Glen Lake Elementary.

The students studied Pourquoi (How and Why) Stories, chose a creature about which to write a story (in this case, a jellyfish), and then did some research. We found this picture particularly interesting: http://ocean.nationalgeographic.com/ocean/photos/ocean-jellyfish/#/jellyfish11-jellyfish-tide_17915_600x450.jpg

Once we knew the scientific reasons behind the picture, the students created this fictional story using the Pourquoi framework we had studied.

  3. This story was created as part of a Literacy Residency led by Storyteller and Teaching Artist Katie Knutson in Ms. Erstad's 2012-13 Kindergarten class at Tanglen Elementary.

The students studied the story structure of "The Ugly Duckling" and similar stories. Then they chose two similar animals (a lobster and a crab) and did some research. We learned a lot comparing and contrasting the two. The students created this fictional story by combining the facts we had learned and the story framework we had studied.
