Dot Your T’s and Cross Your Eyes is an ongoing performance-video-installation project by Patricia Brace and Rita Leduc. Choosing to delve into their works’ predilection towards promoting presence and reality, the project began with the artists’ shared desire to ‘feel felt’ in a world that is growing increasingly more detached.
In Dot Your T’s and Cross Your Eyes (Gothic Cabinet & Craft), each film documents various tactics used by Brace and Leduc as they try to establish and maintain a connection with their chosen location at a chosen time. Utilizing objects found on-site as well as items from Leduc’s “studio on wheels” and breaks from Brace’s rolodex of dance moves, the artists court the space, experiencing its idiosyncrasies in any way they can. It is the artists’ hope that by amassing these encounters, they will develop and solidify a reciprocal relationship between themselves and the Gothic Cabinet & Craft storefront site.
The success of this hope, however, remains in question when the thing with which one desires a connection is inanimate. The resulting installation on display therefore serves not only as a visual translation of Brace and Leduc’s efforts but also a final, comprehensive attempt to resolve their relationship with the site.
