  3. Exhibition Dates: November 2-8, 2012
Guangyu Hall, Pingshan Village, Anhui Province, China

It was not so long ago that the Greater Himalaya were viewed as a remote, frigid clime of little consequence, to which only the most intrepid adventurers were drawn. The immensity of these larger-than-life features of our natural world–oceans, deserts, rivers, mountains and glaciers–evoked awe and even fear. Now these seemingly eternal and invincible aspects of our planet's architecture are on the defensive.

COAL+ICE moves from the coal mines deep within the earth to the glaciers of the greater Himalaya where greenhouse gasses are precipitously warming the high altitude climate. As these mighty glaciers melt at an accelerated pace, the great rivers of Asia that flow from the Tibetan Plateau into the oceans are disturbed, affecting the lives of billions of people downstream.

The 2012 Yixian International Photo Festival presents COAL+ICE at Guangyu Hall in Pingshan Village. COAL+ICE debuted in Fall 2011 at Three Shadows Photography Art Centre. COAL+ICE is a documentary photography exhibition featuring the work of photographers from China, the United States, Malaysia, Canada, Russia, Hungary, Poland, Norway, Germany, and the United Kingdom, whose work, when brought together, visually narrates the complex chain of consequences that are triggered by mankind's use of fossil fuels.
