  4. Arbutus trees, also called madronas in the USA, enchant us because of their twisted and sometimes contorted shapes, their curling bark, colourful trunk and dark green, glossy leaves. They typically grow on sheer rock cliffs, never far from the ocean. Their trunks often extend in long, sinuous curves out over the cliff and the water below. When their bark peels off in patches,
