On Telestream's rear tire in both of the final two heats, as well as running up front in all afternoon heats, was Mountain Recreation owner Jason Auld.
Converting a discarded sky-box ski carrier into a soapbox car offered Auld and teammates an immediate aerodynamic design, with the only resistance of wind being Auld's helmeted head peeking through a single hole in the green shell.
Auld said the simple and straightforward approach meant not many changes were needed through the day.
But he was impressed in the result of two changes — one in weight and another tires — that helped turn things around after a less-than impressive test run last week.
“We kind of came out of nowhere,” said Auld, now an apparent full-fledged fan of the soapbox derby.
“This is the best thing that's happened around here in a long time,” he said. “It's killer. For the first year, I was just impressed how cool a lot of the stuff turned out. People put a lot of thought into it.”
