Day 63 - Documenta Halle, Kassel, Germany, August 1997.
Philip Pocock presents the first Internet work produced by documenta Gmbh "A Description of the Equator and Some ØtherLands". Assembling a team for this 'future cinema', Philip Pocock worked closely with Florian Wenz, Udo Noll and Felix Stephan Huber and Øthers, uploading text and video from along the Equator in Uganda and on the Java Sea, along with other Web2.0 documenta X guests. This pioneering work saw the introduction into new media art of:
    - the use of participatory programming systems using Red Hat Linux, php1.0 and msql (no mysql yet) now CMS (content management systems)
    - the introduction of the term and concept of the 'Tag' as a user-driving force for interacting with user-generated online media made in Africa, Asia, America or Europe.
    - a user profile providing metadata on 'My' current location, emotion, situation, etc. for any associated text or video upload.
    - slowness.
documenta X director Catherine David introduces Philip Pocock, who had set up 2 terminals in the audience so that Documenta Halle might choose to IRC chat with his 'ØtherLanders' Udo Noll in Cologne or Florian Wenz in Changmai, the log of which was intermittently thrown up on the beamer behind Philip Pocock with a keystroke. The entire event was streamed live by documenta X using Real Player and Server.
