DepthKit (rgbdtoolkit.com/) is a software package used to combine the 3D data from a depth camera (Microsoft Kinect, ASUS Xtion) and a 2D video camera. In this case we used a Sony A7s and a Microsoft Kinect V1 (model 1414). After calibrating the depth data stream with the A7s and Rokinon 24mm lens, the footage was shot and post-processed in DepthKit. Since the Kinect provides 3D data a filmmaker has virtual camera control (more like a project in Unity or a 3D animation program) as well as the depth window of the data flow. This allows camera position relative to the animation to be controlled. The resulting footage can be exported as a 2D PNG image sequence or additionally an .OBJ 3D mesh sequence. Here the 2D image sequence was imported into AfterEffects to create the movie.
