1. Sounds and Rhythms of Resistance is Taller’s answer to this year’s Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA) question “If You Had a Time Machine,” celebrating, through music and dance, Puerto Rico's 1873 emancipation from slavery. From the drumbeats of Africa to the cadences of the Puerto Rican Bomba, this event will feature New York based Pleneros de la 21’s contemporary arrangements and harmonies with a message of pride in their musical ancestors; Philadelphia’s Kulu Mele’s traditional African dance, rooted in the cultures and aesthetic values of the African Diaspora; Familia Rojas’ multi-generational ensemble bring their passion and dedication to preserving traditional Bomba.

This event is presented with special support from Health Partners.
