On Sunday, 8 September 2013, the 561st Air Force Band performed for the last time. Celebrating its history in pictures, current band members and alumni provided a live musical accompaniment to this video during its inactivation ceremony at Moffett Federal Airfield, in Mountain View, CA. With scenes of its 1945 North Africa and 2009 Middle East war time service, 1957 Inaugural Parade march, service to California’s people and its governors, outreach to audiences at its home station to half a world away, honors and celebrations, and feature film performance gracing the screen beside the band, the 561st showed to those present that while its voice might be stilled, its spirit lives on.
In November, 2011, six of 11 Air National Guard bands were notified that they would be closing in 2013. For these bands summer 2012 was their last tour. The 561st Air Force Band (AKA Air National Guard Band of the West Coast) performed its final tour along the central coast of California in partnership with the 562nd Air Force Band which will be absorbing some of the 561st's membership. The tour's finale was performed by the 561st alone, with the band ending its 70 year history in Santa Clara, near its home base of Moffett FAF, in Mountain View, CA. This slide show is a keepsake of those final days together.
