1. The Diamond Light Source synchrotron facility ( http://www.diamond.ac.uk/ ) located at Harwell in Oxfordshire and the Pirbright Institute ( http://www.pirbright.ac.uk/ ) commissioned iemedia solutions to produce a video detailing the revolutionary new technique they have developed for the production of a safe vaccine against the Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV).

The video shows how culture cells are used to produce synthetic empty protein shells which are almost identical to those in the FMDV capsid. However, because there is no actual viral RNA present there is no risk of creating infective viruses with the advantage that production can take place in non-high containment facilities. The edges of the sub-units forming the protein shells are cross-linked with each other to stabilise the empty shell - this ensures that the vaccine will produce a strong immune response in the vaccinated animal and also means that the vaccine does not require specialised cold storage. The video ends with the release from the culture cell of vast numbers of new empty protein shells which are harvested to produce the vaccine.

The Diamond Light Source synchrotron facility was used to investigate the detailed 3D structure of the proteins that form the shell of the virus.

The video shows the infection of a cell by the FMDV, the translation of the viral RNA strand to produce proteins for both replication of the RNA itself and for the formation of the protein shell (capsid) that packages the replicated viral RNA strands. The video ends with the release of vast numbers of new virus particles from the infected cell.
