  3. The New River Birding and Nature Festival takes place in and around the New River Gorge National River. Administrated by the National Park Service, this area is the heart of the upland, hardwood forests that Cornell Lab of Ornithology has identified as a crucial stopover habitat for the continued survival of species such as Golden-winged, Blue-winged, and Swainson's Warbler, as well as the Scarlet Tanager.   5. In 1966, just after completion of the Summersville Dam & Reservoir, mother nature put it to the test. For the one time in it's history, the water behind the largest earthen Dam East of the Mississippi overflowed into the spillway and cascaded over the cliffs and into the Gauley River Canyon.
