Angel Delgadillo could without any argument be called the face of Route 66. People come literally from around the world to see him in person or be one of the very few lucky enough to get a old fashioned barber shave at his shop in sleepy Seligman Arizona.
This interview is part of my film "Route 66 - Ten Years Later" based on Tim Steil's book "Route 66". Tim and I have been blessed with two one on one sittings with Angel, and 4 shaves between us. Angel, who's name perfectly sums him up, is an inspiring figure, the biggest Route 66 cheerleader and all around wonderful person.
Please share this link, the more people who can experience a one on one with Angel the better.
This movie cost me about $15,000 of my own (chase credit card) money...Vimeo has a tip jar now, if you're so inclined, please drop some coins in there, I'd appreciate it. Or email me through luningphoto.com to purchase a complete DVD of the film for $10 shipped.
In 1999 Journalist Tim Steil and Photographer Jim Luning began driving west down Ogden Avenue in Chicago just after sunrise. They were moments into a trip that they already knew was going to be a life changer. That trip, sponsored by a publishing company, was to capture Route 66 - arguably the most famous road in the world - as it was today. The book (seen here on Amazon http://tinyurl.com/a692wa2 ) was a hit among Route 66 fans and even those with a faint interest in the route.
During a "haven't seen ya in a couple years, what the hell are you up to" call the two realized that the ten year anniversary of the trip was fast approaching. A plan was hatched to redo the trip in honor of that mile marker and revisit some of the people and places featured in the book as well as find some new adventures. The simple, or so they thought, goal was to see what had changed in 10 years along this stretch of historic black top.
In 2009 what started out as a documentary about what was happening outside the car became a road trip story about change within individuals in the fast lane contrasting life in the slow lane. A mix of humor, amazing interviews of iconic Route 66 characters, wonderful scenery, self discovery and reflection make this an honest and enjoyable 55 minute and 19 second road trip experience. You'll want to jump in the car and drive.
The film was a labor of love to create, no funding by Kickstarter was used (it didn't become popular until AFTER the project had been shot and edited...damnit), if you're so inclined there is a tip jar on Vimeo, a coin or two would be nice for viewing the film. If you'd like a DVD copy please email me through luningphoto.com and I'll get you a signed copy, they're $10 which includes shipping. The DVD has my WGN radio interview, story telling with Tim Steil, Garmin and Google Map files of route 66, a behind the scenes PDF, as well as a timelapse of my 36hr solo drive home from LA to Chicago as extras on the disc.
