  4. I shot this during an initial preproduction trip to Ghana in 1996 for my documentary series on African Christianity. Though witnessing this instance of the wildly popular prayer camp movement at the time provided an important lesson for this project, we never portrayed the work of any such prayer camp. By then, all mainline churches, including Catholics, Methodists and Presbyterians, had deliverance ministries of this kind, some modeled quite directly of prayer camp routines. After praise and worship, people gave personal testimonies and then people were called forward suffering from different kinds of problems felt to have spiritual sources--like marriage problems, in this passage, seen to result from an inner, "spiritual marriage," to some spirit, keeping them from their spouse. Pulling on their ring finger is one way some express their affliction. The immense popularity of the prayer camp movement, given needs it met, was an important lesson I took with me from these first field trips. I'm grateful to Dr. Kingsley Larbi, now President of Regent University in Accra, for introducing me to the leaders of Macedonia and for teaching me about the phenomenon.

    Jim,

Just viewed these and found them to be fascinating and insightful. Will send them on to friends who ministered in Cote D'Ivoire for many years for their review and comments.
