The Dust Off Saga

DUST OFF is the story of the world's first dedicated helicopter medevac units - the Original Dust Off helicopter ambulance detachments - and the men who fought a war on two fronts- with the enemy to save lives and the military establishment to keep the unit alive - in order to pursue its mission.

William Broyles, a Marine veteran and writer of screen and television hits like CHINA BEACH, APOLLO 13 and CASTAWAY, described this as "... a good story, an important story".

DUST OFF is a classic hero's journey, based on the true story of Maj. Charles Kelly and Capt. Patrick Brady, and the heroic mission that brought Brady the Medal of Honor. It's the story of the humanitarian war fought by the all-volunteer Dust Off crews who fought to save the lives and limbs of all who were in need, American, Allied, civilians and enemy, no matter the cost. In a war defined by body count, the pilots, medics and ground crews of Dust Off waged a war built on a body count of lives saved. It's about courage, sacrifice and faith, and in fact, Maj. Kelly's dying words - "When I have your wounded..." - became the signature for the helicopter medevac service.

It's also the story of the Huey, the Bell UH-1 "Iroquois" helicopter. Much is made of the combat role for helicopters in Vietnam; but the first UH-1 "Huey" helicopters were deployed in Vietnam in 1962 to test air ambulance operations in the field, more than three years before "Air Mobile" combat units came on the scene. Military nurses like Barbara Rounds have said, "To this day, I can hear a Huey. I mean, it's a very distinct sound, and the Huey was what the Dust Off pilots used... My heroes in Vietnam were the combat medics and the Dust Off pilots."

But more than anything, DUST OFF is the story of a promise kept to the men on the ground, who knew that when the call went out for Dust Off, it was a call that would be answered by the familiar "wup-wup-wup" of a Huey, and the pounding boots of the Dust Off crews retrieving the wounded, any time, in any weather, and in any battle condition.
