  4. This is one of my personal favorites from MONUC. From time to time, we would be the victim of disinformation campaigns from those in the DRC who wanted to get rid of us. In this case, someone was spreading the rumor that the DRC government was actually footing the bill for the MONUC mission; this suggestion was so absurd that we did not take it seriously - until we discovered doing VOX POPS that a lot of people actually believed it. We decided to figure out an effective way to respond, and I thought humor might work, since a serious response would give the lie too much credibility. I had been looking for a way to work with the great Congolese mime Mira Mikhenza, aka Coco Souing. and together we created a character called Professeur Kivuila - a grand savant, who was like an African Einstein. A question would be asked by the presenters, who would then ask people in the street - and then Professor would correct him - often quite harshly. I hoped we could use this format for many similar questions, but the UN is not known for its sense of humor, even though the show was very popular, since the Congolese do have a sense of humor, and they love Mira, whose music video Coco Souing was one of the best things ever done for the MONUC mission by an Congolese - and MONUC didn't pay for a penny for it!:)

  5. A video we made for MONUC Force Commander General Babucar Gaye to show how MONUC troop deployment had evolved over 10 years. The video was shown at a gathering of all the other DPKO Force Commanders and was a big hit - possibly because General Gaye was the only one with a video to show!:) Subsequently, General Gaye was selected head of all military peacekeeping operations.
